Understanding the tides to enjoy the coast :

Life on the Vendée coast is punctuated by the tides! Knowing their times is essential for organising your day, whether you're fishing, swimming or just taking a stroll on the beach.
Clearly, on the coast, the sea never stands still! It rises (high tide) and falls (low tide), and changes all the time.

Why does the sea rise and fall?

It's the Moon and the Sun that 'pull' the water. When the Moon is there, it attracts the water: this is high tide. When it moves away, the water sinks: this is low tide. In general, there are two high tides and two low tides a day.

What are "tidal coefficients"?

It's a number that tells you how much the sea will rise or fall.
The larger the number (e.g. 100), the further the sea retreats at low tide and the higher it rises at high tide. These are called spring tides.
The smaller the number (e.g. 50), the smaller the difference.

Why is it useful for you?

Knowing the tides is a great way to plan your day!

For swimming :

  • At high tide, more water to swim in.
  • At low tide, the water is very shallow, ideal for young children or for walking.

For fishing on foot: It's the perfect time! At low tide (especially during high tides), the sea uncovers the sand and rocks.

For walks:The beach changes enormously. At low tide, you can walk a long way on the sand.
